Dear Jane Bolster,
Let me begin by introducing myself. My name is Nicole Rosmary Chica. I was born on
January 19, 2000 in Ecuador. I was raised in Brooklyn and The Bronx. I moved to New York
from Ecuador when I was four years old, lived in Brooklyn till I was nine then move to The
Bronx. I have lived in the Bronx ever since with my mother and four siblings. My major is
Biology and hope to pursuit a career as an oncologist.
I attended Bronx Envision Academy all through my four years of high school. During
high school I recognized my strengths and weakness as a student. I was overall an average
student and enjoy my mathematics and science courses the most. I had the privilege to take
Advanced Placement courses for US History, English, Biology and Computer Science. During
my junior year, I took three courses that were AP. During this year, I found myself more
focused than ever in my Biology course. I would attend class and lose track of time. I was
constantly intrigued by any topic and would find myself asking questions, making comments and connections. I developed a passion for science. I see science as a ball that continues to be tossed around. Science does not end with a definite answer. There is always space for questions and improvements. That exactly is what triggered my interest and passion for science. I am an individual that is not content with what is placed in front of me. I always have to know how and why to everything or it will not register. Science challenges that part of me but also allows it to develop.
Religion to a handful of people explains the world but to me science does. Although I am
a believer in a god, science in my eyes controls and develops the world around us. Science is part of every aspect in life. Jobs in any field use science, it can be technological, medical, agriculture etc. My interest varies. I am always fascinated by technological advances. New devices that at some point in life seem impossible is now a reality. Medicine however is extremely important as well. I aspire to become an oncologist which in hopes to deliver successful and positive outcomes, I will depend on those technological and medicine advances that will help patients. Like everything in life there is always a positive and negative. Some interpret science as dangerous and useless. Some believe that science harms more than it helps. For example, medications. Medicine to some seems as a absurd concept. Some do not respect the idea of inserting unknown substances into their body. I know a lot of people that even refuse annual vaccines because of their belief in science and medicine. Although I understand the concern that arise from society for science, I also support and understand the huge step science allow us as society to take.
This semester I hope to learn a lot about my writing and improve as well. I decided on
this course because of my interest in science as well as my ambition on improving my writing. I
am determined to complete every task with my full potential and hope to maintain at least an A. From this class not only am I striving to see a change in my writing but also in myself as a
student. Writing has always been one of those harder challenges to overcome but I have decided to make a change. I want to leave procrastination behind and spend time reviewing, reflecting and writing. I also hope to have an understanding of science in a different way than what I know it as. Overall I am extremely excited but also a bit anxious but I definitely ready for something different. Really hope to step out of my comfort zone!!
